The first integrated geologic map of the Moon was released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), NASA, and the Lunar & Planetary Institute

  • The integrated geologic map will serve as a blueprint for future human missions to the Moon and will be a source of research and analysis for teachers and ordinary citizens interested in the geology of the Moon.
  • This geologic map is based on a 1: 5,000,000 scale (scale).
  • This geological map analyzed the lunar surface, including Crater Rim Crest, Fisher (Fissure), Graben, Scrap, Scrap (Mare Wrinkle Ridge), Fault, Fault, Trough, Rille etc.
  • Data from NASA’s Apollo Mission have been used to create this map.

Importance:

The South Pole of the Moon is particularly important because it is much larger than the North Pole and may have the possibility of water presence in its permanent shadow regions.

In addition, the fossil record of the early solar system is also included in the South Pole region.

This digital map of the Moon will be more helpful to ensure the success of Moon related missions in the coming days.

It is noteworthy that Chandrayaan-2 is an active mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for exploration at the South Pole of the Moon. Which was launched in July 2019.
