The Indian President and Prime Minister congratulated the people of Gujarat and Maharashtra

Under the States Reorganization Act, 1956 (the States Reorganization Act, 1956) the boundaries for states within the Union of India were defined on linguistic basis. As a result, on November 1, 1956, 14 states and 6 union territories were formed.

Under this act, the Bombay state was formed for Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi and Konkani speaking people.
Despite the extensive reorganization of states in the year 1956, the demand for the creation of other states arose from other states on the basis of language or cultural uniformity and other reasons.

Mahagujarat Conference:

  • In 1937, during a meeting of ‘Gujarat Sahitya Sabha’ held in Karachi, the idea of ​​’Mahagujarat’ was suggested by writer and freedom fighter Kanhaiya Lal Munshi.
  • After the independence in 1947, a ‘Mahagujarat Conference’ was organized in 1948 to integrate the entire Gujarati language speaking population under an administrative body.

Joint Maharashtra Committee (Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti):

  • The Samyukta Maharashtra committee wanted the Bombay state to be divided into two states (one for Gujarati and Kutchis speaking people and another for Marathi and Konkani speaking states).
  • Till 1960, Maharashtra and Gujarat were part of Bombay province. By the Bombay Reorganization Act, 1960, the bilingual state of Bombay was divided into two separate states (Maharashtra for Marathi speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati speaking people).
  • On May 1, 1960, the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat came into existence as two independent states. Under the Indian Constitution, Gujarat became the 15th state of the Indian Union….
