Lockdown: FIEO seeks Mamata's intervention for resumption of border trade

Kolkata. The Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), a leading exporters' organization, has written to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking her intervention to resume Indo-Bangladesh trade. Fio's eastern region president Sushil Patwari said that the West Bengal government had on May 11 issued an order to resume all types of (land and port) border trade, although it has not yet been restored and necessary and deteriorating Thousands of trucks laden with luggage are stranded on roads and ports.

Fio said that this is hurting the export-import community to a great extent, with most of the small and medium businesses. He said that due to lack of supply of goods, the orders of exporters are seen to be canceled, and importers will also suffer. The letter said that if the situation does not improve immediately, many exporters will have to close their offices and they will go bankrupt. Significantly, the Indo-Bangladesh trade in North 24 Parganas district was halted on May 2 after protests by locals. Villagers feared that truck drivers and laborers might spread the corona virus infection.
