new Delhi. Indian Railways has operated a total of 2570 labor special trains since May 1, through which 3.2 million migrant laborers have reached their home state. Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said that these labor special trains are being run mainly on the request of the states. These trains are being run on an 85:15 per cent expense ratio between the center and the state. Railways themselves bear 85 percent of the total expenditure of running these trains, the rest are being given by the states. The railway official said that the average cost of operating a train is Rs 80 lakhs and according to this the total expenditure of running 2570 trains was Rs 2056 crore and 85 percent i.e. Rs 1747 crore has been spent by the Railways.
Out of a total of 2,570 trains, 505 trains have not yet reached their destination, the remaining 2,065 trains have completed their journeys. According to railway figures, Uttar Pradesh has reached the maximum number of 1246 workers special trains, followed by 804 in Bihar and 124 in Jharkhand.
On the other hand, Gujarat has sent 759, Maharashtra 483 and Punjab 291 workers to migrant workers on special trains. Significantly, thousands of migrant workers were leaving for their homes on foot, on bicycles or by other means due to the lockdown implemented to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Many migrant workers also died in various road accidents. After this, the railways started operating special labor trains from May 1 to take the workers to their home states.
Railways has planned to run 2600 laborers special trains in the next 10 days and the target is to bring more 36 lakh laborers to their homes. Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said that in an effort to return to normalcy, the Railway Ministry will run 200 Mail Express trains from June 1. He said that for the last four days, on an average 260 workers are running special trains daily and three lakh workers are taking advantage of them every day.
