The country's gas production decreased by 18.6 percent in April 2020 due to the lockdown

India's gas output falls by one-fifth in April due to lockdown

New Delhi The country's natural gas production declined by 18.6 percent in April 2020 due to the nationwide lockdown implemented in the country to prevent the spread of Kovid-19 infection. According to data released by the Petroleum Ministry on Saturday, gas production in April stood at 2.16 billion cubic meters, 18.6 percent less than 2.65 billion cubic meters in the same month last year.

The country's largest gas producer ONGC has seen a sharp decline in production, resulting in a drop in overall production. ONGC's gas production in the month under review was down 15.3 percent to 1.72 billion cubic meters. The ministry said that the gas production of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has come down due to reduction in gas lift by customers due to Kovid-19.

Public sector oil India Ltd's gas production also declined by 10 percent to 202 million cubic meters. The country's crude oil production declined 6.35 percent to 2.5 million tonnes in the month under review. ONGC's crude oil production declined marginally to 1.7 million tonnes in April. Production from private sector companies such as Cairn's operating areas declined by 19.2 percent to 6,15,800 tonnes. According to the data, production of Cairn's Rajasthan region fell by 19.2 percent to 4,90,560 tonnes.

The ministry said that most of the vehicles remained off the roads due to the lockdown. Due to this, the refineries produced 30 percent less i.e. 18.8 million tonnes of fuel in April. The ministry said that the main reason for the decrease in production is the huge fall in demand due to the enforced shutdown due to Kovid-19.
