India joins five major honey producing countries of the world, honey production rises 242 percent

Rs 500 cr for beekeeping initiatives, will help 2 lakh beekeepers

new Delhi. Union Minister of Agriculture and Agricultural Welfare, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Narendra Singh Tomar said on Friday that India has made it to the five largest honey producing countries in the world. Honey production in the country has increased by 242 percent compared to 2005-06. Tomar said that to increase the income of the farmers, the government is promoting bee keeping and a provision of Rs 500 crore has been made by the government to further promote bee keeping under the self-sufficient India campaign.

Due to the hard work of beekeepers in the country, India has been named among the five largest producers of honey in the world. Agriculture Minister said that compared to the year 2005-06, now honey production has increased by 242 percent whereas its exports have increased by 265 percent. He said that beekeeping can prove to be very helpful in doubling the income of farmers. This information has been given in the ministry's release here. The Agriculture Minister said this in a webinar organized by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) on the subject of sweet revolution and self-reliant India. The webinar was organized by NCDC in association with National Bee Board, Government of West Bengal, Government of Uttarakhand and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology, Kashmir.

Tomar said that with the increase in honey production and its exports, it is showing that farmers are benefiting from this work, their standard of living is changing and their income is also increasing. He said that four modules have been made for the training of beekeeping, through which 30 lakh farmers have been trained in the country and other assistance has also been provided to them. Tomar said that on the basis of the recommendations of the committee set up to promote bee keeping, the government is also working ahead.

He said that beekeeping can also be done by poor people to earn more profits in less capital. Therefore, to increase this, a package of Rs 500 crore has been announced by the Prime Minister. He said that this will help in improving the condition of bee keepers as well as farmers.
