building smart cities along Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, says Nitin Gadkari

new Delhi. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project. After the construction of this express, the distance of Delhi-Mumbai will be covered in 12 hours. This project, being developed completely afresh, will reduce the existing distance of both cities by 220 km. The estimated cost of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project is one lakh crore rupees.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government has sought legal advice for the construction of Smart Cities, Smart Villages and Logistic Parks along with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The government wants to know whether NHAI can do this so that the opportunity can be taken advantage of by developing the most backward, tribal and remote areas of the country.

This new expressway will depart on a different route from the old Delhi-Mumbai route. It will pass through many backward and remote tribal areas of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. It is targeted to be completed in three years.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari said that we are considering developing smart cities, smart villages, logistic parks, industrial complexes and roadside facilities along with expressways. He said that we have sought legal advice whether NHAI can do this. If the answer remains positive, then we will start working in this direction immediately.

Gadkari said that though NHAI has its authority since its inception and there is a provision in its constitution for this. But he still wants to get legal advice on this so that work on this ambitious project can be started. He said that if the answer is found negative then we will put this proposal for approval of the Cabinet.
