State to provide free ration to 8 crore migrant laborers in 15 days: Food Minister

The Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Saturday appealed to the state governments to immediately pick up food grains and pulses from the godowns, amid incidents of a long journey for hundreds of migrant laborers to return home due to the Kovid-19 crisis. And within 15 days distribute it free of charge to about eight crore migrants who have neither the center nor the state's ration card. According to the Food Ministry, the move will cost 142 lakh in Uttar Pradesh, 86.45 lakh in Bihar, 70 lakh in Maharashtra, 60 lakh in West Bengal, 54.64 lakh in Madhya Pradesh, 44.66 lakh in Rajasthan, 40.19 lakh in Karnataka, 38.25 lakh in Gujarat. , 35.73 lakh in Tamil Nadu, 26.37 lakh in Jharkhand, 26.82 lakh in Andhra Pradesh and 25.15 lakh migrant laborers in Assam.

Around 7.27 lakh migrants in the national capital will get 5 kg of grain and one kg of gram free per person for May and June. Paswan told reporters through a video conference here that if the number of migrants exceeds eight crore, the center is ready to provide additional food grains for free supply.

This allocation has been made considering the equivalent of 10 percent of the existing 81 crore beneficiaries of NFSA (National Food Security Act) in the category of non-card migrants. The distribution of free food to eight crore migrants for two months was announced by the central government on 14 May, which was part of the economic package announced by the government. This package is for the migrants who have been affected by the lockdown implemented due to the Kovid-19 crisis. The cost will be borne by the Center, which is estimated to be around Rs 3,500 crore.
