Record food grain production possible for fourth consecutive year in the country, expectation of good monsoon

new Delhi. Agricultural production in the country is expected to hit a new record level for the fourth consecutive year. Due to good monsoon rainfall, a record food production of 29 crore 56 lakh 70 thousand tons has been estimated in the crop year 2019-20. This information has been given in the latest data released on Friday by the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the Third Advance Estimates of Food Production, the estimated production of food grains this year will be 3.67 percent more than the previous year. During the year, the production of food grains estimated before the sowing season of the year 2019-20 will also exceed 29 million 11 lakh tonnes. Total food production includes crops grown in both kharif (summer) and rabi (winter) seasons.

Harvesting of rabi crops is in its final stages amid the ongoing crisis of the Kovid-19 virus. This is the fourth consecutive year of increase in food production since the 2016-17 (July-June) crop year. The previous record was 28.52 million tonnes during the crop year 2018-19. The total rainfall during the monsoon season (June to September 2019) in the country has been 10 percent higher than the long-term average (LPA). The third advance estimate released by the Ministry of Agriculture states that the production of most crops in the agricultural year 2019-20 is expected to be much higher than their normal production. The main Rabi crop of all crops – wheat production is estimated to reach an all-time high of 102.72 million tonnes in the year 2019-20, which was 10 crore 36 lakh tonnes last year. The harvest of wheat crop is in the final stages of completion. Similarly, the production of rice, the main kharif crop, is estimated to be 11.97 million tonnes this year, which is higher than the production of 11.56 million tonnes last year. The record production of coarse grains is estimated to be 40.5 million tonnes, which was 40 million tonnes last year. The production of this crop has been estimated to increase to 29.9 million tonnes this year as against the production of 27.77 million tonnes in the crop year 2018-19. But the production of barley is expected to come down to 15.9 lakh tonnes as compared to 16.3 lakh tonnes earlier.

In the case of pulses, the total production is expected to increase from 20 million tonnes last year to 20 million tonnes this year. Out of which pigeon production is estimated at 37.5 lakh tons and gram one million nine lakh tons. In oilseeds, the total production in the crop year 2019-20 is expected to increase to 3.35 million tonnes, which was earlier 30 million tonnes. The production of cotton in cash crops is expected to reach an all-time high of 30 million bales in the current year, compared to 27.8 million bales last year. The previous record was 3.59 crore bales in the 2013-14 crop year.
