Roberto Azevedo quits as WTO chief a year early

new Delhi. The World Trade Organization (WTO) said on Thursday that its chief Robert Ejvedo would step down from his post on 31 August. He is leaving his office a year before his term ends due to personal reasons.

India is also one of the founding members of the Geneva-based world trade body. The WTO is tasked with creating regulations for global exports and imports.

The WTO said in a statement that in a meeting held through video conferencing of all members of the organization, Robert Ejvedo announced that he would step down on August 31. He is stepping down exactly one year before his second term ends.

Ejvedo said that with the information of his departure before time, the member countries would be able to choose his successor. He said that this is a personal decision. Ejvedo said that I want to clarify that the reason for this is not a health issue nor am I seeing any political opportunity.
