new Delhi. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has resumed operations at the Manesar plant in Haryana after 40 days, with about 2,000 employees. The company has given this information in a statement released on Tuesday. The company received approval from the local administration on 22 April to begin production at the unit with a limited number of employees.
The workforce on Tuesday is about one-fifth of the total workforce at the Manesar plant, with a total of 10,000–12,000 employees. Maruti Suzuki Chairman R.C. Speaking to IANS, Bhargava said that operations at the Manesar plant have started. We have not set any target, but this will depend on market conditions. We will follow all the rules laid down by the government.
Apart from this, the company has also started production at the Gurugram Sector 18 plant, where a large number of Alto and WagonR models are made. Also, most vendors supplying critical equipment have also started limited operations. A large number of vehicles are manufactured at the Manesar plant, with large-scale production of Desire, S-Preso, Ciaz and Artiga.
The plant has a productive capacity of 8.80 lakh vehicles per year. The manufacturing capacity of the Gurugram plant is seven lakh units per year. The company had informed the stock exchanges on 6 May that it was going to resume operations of its Manesar plant from 12 May.
The company said in a statement, that following the 'social distancing', the company will not work with more than 50 percent of its workforce. According to the circulations issued, the company will monitor and mark the places where there is high expectation of congestion. All the crowded areas like entry gate, bus stop, water cooler, canteen. To ensure a distance of two meters at such places, a social distancing marking has also been put in place.
The use of the sanatorium bridge has been recommended to all staff for screening and monitoring. Employee health will be continuously monitored through in-house app wellness-mitra and mandatory non-contact body temperature scanning.
Companies are starting production at their plants, as well as retail outlets. Maruti has delivered 1650 cars since the lockdown was relaxed. The company has received new bookings of 550 cars following the announcement of Maruti Suzuki starting production.
