half of wheat purchase target met despite lockdown

Wheat Procurement

new Delhi. The government has procured 216 lakh tonnes of wheat from farmers in the current marketing year of Rabi season till Wednesday. During this session, the target of procurement of 400 lakh tonnes of wheat at the minimum support price has been set, of which more than half the target has been achieved. This information is given in the official statement. The Food Ministry said in a statement that despite all the hurdles caused by lockdown across the country, there has been a spurt in wheat and rice (second crop) procurement during the current Rabi season. It said that against the target of purchasing 400 lakh tonnes of wheat, wheat procurement for the central pool (buffer stock) has reached 216 lakh tonnes by May 6.

Punjab is at the forefront with the purchase of 104.28 lakh tonnes so far, followed by Haryana with 50.56 lakh tonnes and Madhya Pradesh with 48.64 lakh tonnes. Similarly, procurement of paddy by government agencies is also going on smoothly, so far 44.9 lakh tonnes have been procured. Unseasonal rains have also damaged some stocks of wheat in the producing states. But the Center has already relaxed the purchase conditions, which will greatly help in the procurement process and farmers have got relief from the crisis.

Most of the paddy has been procured in Telangana. Out of the total paddy purchase of about 4.5 million tonnes, Telangana alone accounts for 3 million tonnes. After this, about 1 million tonnes of paddy has been procured in Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, the lifting of foodgrains by the state governments under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) has crossed the 70 lakh tonne level, which is about 58 per cent of the total allocation for three months. Under this scheme, 5 kg of food grains and one kg of pulses are being distributed free of cost to about 80 crore beneficiaries across the country. Free food grains will be supplied for three months under the PMGKY scheme.
