Import of Edible Oils in April 2020 down by 34 percent

new Delhi. Imports of vegetable oils declined by 34 percent in April 2020 due to the lockdown implemented in the country due to the corona virus epidemic. The country imported a total of 7,90,377 tonnes of vegetable oil during April 2020 as against 11,98,763 tonnes in April last year, according to data released by the Oil-Oilseeds Industry Organization Solvent Extractors Association (SEA). On an annual basis, the import of vegetable oil has decreased by 34 percent during this period.

SEA reported that earlier in March 2020, 941,219 tonnes of oil were imported. SEA reported that the decline in the import of vegetable oils in April was due to logistic issues arising out of lockdown in both the exporter and importer countries.

The total edible oil imports during November 2019 to April 2020 stood at 6,182,184 tonnes as compared to 7,203,830 tonnes in the same period last year. Thus, during this period, imports of edible oils have declined by 14 percent.
