Sugar demand fall

new Delhi. The lockdown is putting pressure on every part of the economy. The latest signs come from the sugar industry. According to data released by the Indian Sugar Mills Association, sugar sales declined by 1 million tonnes in March and April. The drop in sales was due to the lockdown. The special thing is that during the first 5 months of the sugar season started in October, sales were up 10.24 lakh tonnes. Due to the lockdown, this increase has now completely ended and sugar sales have come down to the level of last year.

On the other hand, sugar production has also seen a decline. The country's sugar mills have produced 258 lakh tonnes of sugar from October 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020, which is 63.7 lakh tonnes less than the same period last year. Sugar mills produced a total of 321.7 lakh tonnes of sugar in the same period last year.

During the period, production has declined in all major sugar producing states except Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh had produced 116.5 lakh tonnes of sugar till April 30, which is 3.72 lakh tonnes more than the previous year. Maharashtra has produced 60.67 lakh tonnes of sugar. Last year, 107.15 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced. According to ISMA, except for 90 sugar mills all over the country has stopped crushing.

According to the report, about 3.5 million tonnes of sugar has been sent from the mills for export. Along with this, a large number of orders have also been received from Indonesia and Iran, which will be sent as soon as the lockdown is relaxed.

ISMA has expressed the hope that once the lockdown begins to get relaxed, there will be an increase in sugar sales. According to the association, after the relaxation of the lockdown, there will be demand from the dealers to fill the stock, which is almost over now, on the other hand, with the increase in heat, the demand for sugar from the beverages, ice cream producers also increased. Is expected to be.
