IT Minister Prasad writes to Zuckerberg, accuses Facebook employees of abusing PM

new Delhi. Union Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has written a complaint to Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday. He has written in the letter that Facebook employees are supporting those who have consistently suffered defeat in the elections and those who have been allegedly abusive to the Prime Minister and senior cabinet ministers. He alleged that people sitting in the Facebook India team do not respond despite complaints of favoritism.

Prasad said that before the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, Facebook India management deleted the pages of supporters of right-wing ideology. Not only this, they also reduced their reach. The Union Minister said that many senior officials in the Facebook India team are supporters of a particular political ideology. Facebook employees say abusive words towards PM Modi and senior Union ministers.

A committee of parliament will meet on Wednesday to discuss the alleged misuse of this social media platform, amid political outcry over the Facebook issue. The Standing Committee on Information Technology Affairs headed by senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has summoned Facebook representatives and it will hear their views on the topic of defense of civil rights and the alleged misuse of social media platform.

The committee has also summoned representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the issue related to Facebook. The committee was to meet on Tuesday, but it was postponed to Wednesday due to national mourning due to the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee. The Congress on Tuesday, citing reports of some international media groups, again accused the nexus between Facebook and BJP and claimed that the attack on India's democracy and social harmony has been exposed.

The main opposition party also said that this entire episode should be investigated immediately and people found guilty should be punished. Former party president Rahul Gandhi targeted the government, sharing the recent news of the American newspaper Wall Street Journal on Twitter. He claimed that the international media has openly exposed Facebook and WhatsApp attacks on India's democracy and social harmony.
