COAI estimates about the telecom sector

new Delhi. The revenue of the telecom industry is expected to increase by 14 to 15 percent in the current financial year (2020-21). The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), an association of telecom companies, has estimated this. COAI said that the operator's average earnings per customer (ARPU) has increased slightly, which is expected to increase their overall revenue. However, the number of mobile connections during the financial year is expected to remain at the earlier level. During this time, the number of connections in rural areas will increase, which will compensate for the decrease in the number of customers in urban areas.

SP Kochar, the newly appointed Director General of COAI, told PTI that it is not a good situation for the current three-four private companies to dominate only one or two companies in the market. He said that in order to provide good services to consumers at better prices, it is necessary that there should be enough competition among service providers in the market.

He said that the financial crisis of the industry is not hidden from anyone. COAI will continue to raise the issues of spectrum usage charges and license fee reductions, Goods and Services Tax (GST) exemption on them. Apart from this, we also want GST exemption on payment of spectrum received in the auction. Asked whether the telecom industry is moving towards a monopoly or dominance of the two companies, Kochhar said he is in favor of competition. He said that in the end the common people should get the benefit of telecommunications, and this is not possible in the event of monopoly.
