new Delhi. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has praised the farmers for sowing records of paddy and other crops despite the Kovid-19 epidemic. Naidu said in a Facebook post, "Farming is our core culture and a mainstay of our economy. We need to protect and encourage it. "He said that the total area under paddy so far this year is 378 lakh hectares, which is about 12 percent more than 339 lakh hectares in the same period last year. The Vice President said that the area under sowing of pulses has also increased by 6.8 percent to 132.5 lakh hectares. For all the three major pulses – arhar, urad and moong – this year, more acreage is reported as compared to the same period last year.

"Due to good rains, kharif sowing has increased by 8.6 per cent compared to the same week last year," he said. He highlighted some other achievements made by the Indian agriculture sector this year. He said that sowing of oilseeds crops has registered a 14 percent increase over the last year. The area under soybean and groundnut cultivation has also increased more than last year. The cotton crop has been grown on 127.7 lakh hectares, which is 3.4 percent higher than the same period last year. He said, "We should always be grateful to the farmers, who are working day and night despite adverse conditions to feed millions." Happy Annadata.
