Par panel likely to submit report on One Nation One Ration Card, housing scheme in Sept

A standing committee of Parliament is not very satisfied with the progress made in the two schemes to provide food grains and rent to the migrant laborers and those working in the unorganized sector. The committee can make its recommendations in the first week of next month. A member of the committee gave this information.

Officials of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Department of Food and Public Distribution and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Monday briefed the committee about social security and welfare measures for inter-state migrant laborers and workers working in unorganized sectors. A member of the Committee on Labor Affairs said that the two schemes – one country, one ration card and Cheap Rent House Complex (ARHC) are not as fast as expected. We are preparing our recommendations and comments in this regard. The final report can be given in the first week of the following month.

The government has introduced two models under ARHC. First, to rent vacant houses built by the Center and the states (in public-private partnership) and second, to rent private and public sector vacant land for rent to migrant laborers and those working in organized sector. To encourage

The member said that there is no significant progress on both models under the ARHC scheme. Punjab is the only state to have brought the memorandum in this context. Regarding the initiative to provide food grains to the migrant laborers, the member said that in July this year, about 2,000 ration card holders have availed under one country, one ration card. There are 81 crore ration card holders in the country. According to the member, there are several technical issues which are affecting one country, one ration card scheme and the committee will make its recommendations in this context in the report to be presented next month.

According to the member, officials said on Monday that so far 24 states and union territories have been covered under one country, one ration card. Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Assam and West Bengal are still out of its purview.
