new Delhi. The Center has alerted the state governments as well as the seed industry and research bodies about suspected or unwanted seed parcels arriving in India from an unknown source, which may be a threat to the country's biodiversity. The Ministry of Agriculture has said that a directive has been issued in this regard. Thousands of suspected seed consignments have been reported across the world in the last few months.
The Ministry has stated that the threat of unwanted / suspected seed parcels with misleading packages from unknown sources has been found in the US, Canada, Britain, New Zealand, Japan and some European countries. The ministry also noted that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) called it a scam showing fake figures of seed sales (brushing scam) and agricultural smuggling. The USDA has also reported that unwanted seed parcels may contain exotic invasive species or attempts to introduce pathogens or disease, which can pose a serious threat to the environment, agricultural ecosystems, and national security.
The Ministry of Agriculture said that unwanted or mysterious seed parcels could be a threat to India's biodiversity. It said that, therefore, all states' agriculture departments, state agricultural universities, seed associations, state seed certification agencies, seed corporations, Indian Council of Agricultural Research as well as their own crop-based research institutes should be vigilant about suspicious seed parcels. is directed.
Commenting on the directive, Director-General of the Federation of Seed Industry of India, Ram Kaundinya said in a statement that it is currently only a warning for the possible spread of plant diseases through seeds coming from unauthorized sources without orders. It is not right to call it seed terrorism. There is a limit to what diseases the seeds can bring. But still, it is a danger. He said that these seeds can be an invasive species or weed, which when established in the Indian environment, can compete or displace native species.
