Samsung, Apple contract manufacturers submit proposals for benefits under Rs 50K cr PLI scheme

Contract manufacturing units for major mobile handset companies Samsung and iPhone maker Apple have submitted proposals to take advantage of the government's Rs 50,000-crore production-linked incentive scheme (PLI). Sources gave this information. According to these proposals, contract manufacturing units of Samsung, Lava, Dixon and iPhone are proposed to produce mobile devices and components worth Rs 11 lakh crore during the next five years.

A source said that these companies have submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Electronics and IT to take advantage of production-based incentives. These proposals will create about 12 lakh employment opportunities. There will be three lakh direct and nine lakh indirect employment opportunities. The source said that foreign companies submitting proposals under the scheme include Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hei, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron.

Foxconn Hon Hei, Wistron and Pegatron manufacture Apple iPhones on contract. Peavatron of Taiwan is a new investor in India. Apple and Samsung together account for about 60 percent of the global mobile phone sales business. The source said that under these proposals, about 9 lakh crore rupees mobile handsets will be produced in the next five years worth more than Rs 15,000. At the same time, mobile handsets worth less than Rs 15,000 will be produced for two lakh crore rupees.

The source said that the proposed production capacities would also meet the export demand of about seven lakh crore rupees. Indian companies applying under the scheme include Lava, Dixon Technologies, Micromax and Paiget Electronics. Under the scheme, Lava intends to invest Rs 800 crore in the next five years.
