new Delhi. The Railways has banned all new works related to the approved infrastructure for the current financial year 2020-21. In view of the corona virus epidemic, the government has ordered the postponement of all new schemes up to Rs 500 crore by March 2021, after which the Railways has taken this step to stop the project. The Railway Board informed about the move on Wednesday. With this, the railways has asked the regional railway and all its production units to take up the new work only when it is necessary from the point of view of safety of the operation of trains. However, they will also have to get approval from the Finance Ministry. Railways have suffered a loss of 35,000 to 40,000 crores in the passenger section so far this year due to the epidemic. Apart from this, railway freight is also down 18 percent compared to last year.

According to the order issued by the Railway Board on 28 July, all such works in which there has been little or no progress approved in previous years should also be stopped. However, such tasks which are necessary from the point of view of safety of trains and their safe operation can be continued even further. The order states that the mandate of such works will be reviewed by the additional member concerned, additional member-work and additional member-revenue. It has been said in the order that by 2019-20, the works sanctioned, which have not made special progress, should be stopped till the next order. Officials said that large infrastructure projects of railways like 100 per cent electrification, doubling of high speed corridors will not be affected by this order.
