E-commerce platforms have to display country of origin on imported products: center to HC

new Delhi. E-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal will now have to show the country of origin of the imported products sold on their platform. That is to say which country the imported product belongs to. The Central Government gave this information to the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.

The affidavit filed by the Center before the bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan states that under the Legal Metrology Act and Rules, e-commerce sites must ensure that e-commerce transactions are used for The original country name of a product is indicated on digital and electronic networks.

The affidavit filed through the Central Government advocate Ajay Digpaul states that it is the responsibility of the States and Union Territories to ensure compliance with these regulations. Digpaul said that wherever a violation of these rules was found, the officials of the legal metrology department of the respective states or union territories would ensure action under the law.

The affidavit states that necessary consultations on this have been sent to all e-commerce companies, legal metrology controllers of all states and union territories. The affidavit has been filed by the Center on a PIL. The petition, filed by advocate Amit Shukla, urged the Center to direct that the name of the countries manufacturing their products should be shown on the products sold on e-commerce platforms.
