UC Browser is likely to wind up Indian operations Exclusive: Chinese company UC Browser took decision to close its business from India, not with the government

UC Brouser is likely to wind up Indian operations

new Delhi. UC Browser, the Internet browser of China's Alibaba Group, has decided to consolidate its business from India. Sources said that the decision has been taken in the meeting of UC management on Wednesday morning. Earlier, there had been reports of UC Browser also discontinuing the Indian operation of UC News.

Sources said that with conditions in India challenging and uncertainty about the future, the management has decided to consolidate its business in India. According to sources, Chinese companies have been in constant contact with the Indian government since the 59th Chiapi app was banned in India, but there is no solution to this conversation yet. Due to uncertainty and increasing losses, UC Browser has decided to immediately close its business in India.

The corona virus epidemic has also forced the Chinese company to close its loss-making business in India. ByteDance's short video app Wego and Kawai have already announced closure of their business and UC News has also ceased operations since April 2020. UC News was launched four years ago in India, but it did not succeed in gaining a targeted user base, so now the company has decided to shut it down in India.

Alibaba operates four units in India under UC Web, UC Browser, UC News, Vimate and 9 Apps. A year after its launch, UC News claimed that it had 80 million users in India. Alibaba had announced an investment of Rs 200 crore in UC News business in India and Indonesia. Despite 130 million active users in India, UC News' ranking was not even in the top 500 list on Google Play Store. Currently less than 5 lakh people are opening UC News on a daily basis.
