Despite several attempts in the past to launch Tesla cars on Indian roads, Elon Musk has not yet been able to inaugurate the Tesla showroom in the country. However, he has once again hinted that car enthusiasts in India might get a chance to drive Tesla's Electric Model 3 soon. Answering a question from a follower who booked the car four years ago, Musk said "I hope to launch soon."
A man named Arvind Gupta asked, "How long is the arrival of Dear Elon Musk, Tesla 3 in India? It has been more than four years since it was booked." Musk wrote in response to the question, "Sorry, hope to be launched soon."
Four years ago, Musk had expressed his desire to enter his car in the Indian market, though the matter was not made and he blamed the policies of the Government of India for this. He has also criticized the norms of FDI for delay in entry of electric car manufacturer in the Indian market.
A Twitter user asked him, "Will Tesla not be able to come to India?" In response, he wrote, "I would absolutely love to come to India. Unfortunately this is not happening due to some challenging government regulations."
Tesla's Indian-origin chief financial officer Deepak Ahuja announced his retirement from the firm last year, putting Musk's dream of coming back to India again in question. Tesla was expected to enter India with the Model 3, which costs around $ 35,000, or about Rs 26 lakh. In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Tesla's headquarters in Palo Alto, California, and met Musk, who visited Modi's company's electric car plant.
Tesla has not yet launched any of its electric cars in India or any other country in South Asia. The only Asian market where Tesla has a presence is China.
