area under kharif crop reaches over 580 lakh hectares

new Delhi. This year, sowing of kharif crops has increased tremendously due to the knocking of monsoon time and above average rainfall across the country. The area under kharif crops has increased by 44% to 5.8 million hectare since last year.

According to the data of sowing released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Friday, so far in the current kharif season, kharif crops have been sown in 580.21 lakh hectare, which is 44.13 percent more than 402.57 lakh hectare in the same period last year.

Especially farmers have shown great interest in the cultivation of pulses. In pulses also, area under tur has increased by 199.20 per cent to 26.18 lakh hectare as compared to the same period last year. At the same time, area under urad has been increased to 19.79 lakh hectare and moong sowing area is 15.16 lakh hectare. The area under all pulses crops has increased by 162.35 per cent to 64.25 lakh hectare over last year. At the same time, the area under oilseeds has increased by 85.16 percent to 139.37 lakh hectares.

Sowing of paddy, the main kharif season crop, has been done in 120.77 lakh hectare, which is 26.16% higher than the same period last year. The area under coarse cereals has increased by 29.57 per cent to 93.24 lakh hectare since last year. Sugarcane cultivation was done in 50.89 lakh hectare, which is 0.59 percent more than last year. At the same time, the area under cotton has increased to 104.82 lakh hectare, which is 34.89 percent more than the same period last year.

The Agriculture Ministry said that the sowing of kharif crops had not been affected by the Corona epidemic and the ministry arranged for timely distribution of fertilizers in all the states after forecasting better monsoon. In the current monsoon season till July 9, the country received 275.4 mm of rain, which is 13 percent more than the average.
