In 2018, IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) appointed about 560 supervisors (hospitality) to check the quality of food served by contractors in trains.
The job of the hospitality supervisors was to supervise the operation of trains catering vehicles. Under this, they had to supervise the preparation of food, check the quality, resolve the grievances of the passengers and ensure that no more than the fixed price is taken for the food. IRCTC in a letter on 25 June informed all its zonal offices that in the present circumstances there is no need for these contract workers and their contracts will be terminated by giving them one month's notice.
When contacted, an IRCTC spokesperson confirmed the development, but indicated that the organization is reconsidering the decision. IRCTC spokesperson Siddharth Singh said that we are reconsidering the case. We are considering whether this decision may be reconsidered. Some steps will be taken in this regard.
Meanwhile, these suspended employees have requested Railway Minister Piyush Goyal to intervene and have communicated to them in this regard through social media. IRCTC services have been greatly affected by the lockdown implemented due to Corona virus epidemic. At present, the railway workers are running 230 special trains in addition to special trains. All regular passenger services have been suspended since 23 March.
