Sugar export from Maharashtra hit due to coronavirus lockdown

Mumbai. Chinese exports from Maharashtra are being affected by the lockdown. During the period January to June this year, only 36 lakh tonnes of sugar were exported from the state against the target of 6 million tonnes. Jayaprakash Dandegaonkar, chairman of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factory Federation, said the export process was affected due to the Kovid-19 epidemic and the subsequent lockdown.

He said that from November 2019 to June 2020, 570 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was crushed in the state. So far 63 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced. Dandegaonkar said that 3.6 million tonnes of sugar have been exported. And there have been deals for the export of six lakh tonnes and for this sugar is being released from warehouses.

He said that till now most of the sugar has been exported to Indonesia and Iran. A year ago, 952 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was crushed and 107 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced in the state during the period from January to June. Sugarcane crushing usually starts in November every year and ends in March.
