Wheat Procurement

new Delhi. The government has purchased 38.8 million tonnes of wheat so far in the marketing year 2020-21, a record. With this, Madhya Pradesh has become the largest wheat-giving state in the central granary of the country, leaving behind Punjab. According to a statement by the Food Ministry, 42 lakh farmers across India have benefited from government procurement and have been paid around Rs 73,500 crore as the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat. The previous record for wheat procurement in 2012-13 was 38.8 million tonnes. The procurement of wheat was 3.41 crore tonnes in the marketing year 2019-20. The marketing year of wheat runs from April to March, although most purchases are made in the first three months.

The wheat procurement target for the current year has been set at 4.07 million tonnes. The central organization Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies buy wheat at MSP. According to the Food Ministry, Madhya Pradesh contributed 1.29 crore tonnes to the central reserves, which is the highest. Punjab contributed 12.7 million tonnes. Apart from this, Haryana (74 lakh tonnes), Uttar Pradesh (32 lakh tonnes) and Rajasthan (19 lakh tonnes) also contributed significantly to the national procurement of wheat. The huge influx of food grains in the central reserves ensured that FCI is ready to meet the additional foodgrain requirement for the people of the country in the coming months. During the same period government agencies procured 11.9 million tonnes of rabi paddy at the maximum support price. Under this, 64 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured from Telangana and 31 lakh tonnes from Andhra Pradesh. The ministry said the purchase was made during the Kovid-19 epidemic, when the lockdown was in force across the country.
